Greater Blue Mountains - Wild Freedom on the doorstep of Sydney.
Ten times older than the Grand Canyon and with a human history dating back 22,000 years, the Greater Blue Mountains is one of the three most diverse areas on earth.
This area contains over 1500 species of plants and animals across an exceptional range of habitats. From shimmering mountains and cathedral caves to deep gorges and valleys of water cascading into remnant pre-historic rainforests - the Greater Blue Mountains diversity of flora and fauna has been the catalyst for the area to be declared a World Heritage site.
The rich cultural traditions of the First Australians, with the Greater Blue Mountains being the traditional home for six Aboriginal groups - Darug, Darkinjung, Dharawal, Gundungurra, Wanaruah and Wirajuri - are an important part of this area and you can see their history at the Echo Point Visitor Information Centre in Katoomba. Visitors to the Greater Blue Mountains need to be aware of the sacred significance of the area to these tribes.
The Greater Blue Mountains comprises eight national parks and protected areas, and four internationally significant wetlands. With over 1000 different species of plants, including 127 rare or threatened species and a further 114 species found nowhere else on the planet, the Greater Blue Mountains walking tracks help all visitors to see this fragile environment close up. Please ensure you tread lightly and stay on the tracks.
